About Leitch Collieries

Leitch Collieries Provincial Historic Site respectfully acknowledges that we are located on Treaty 7 territory, a traditional gathering place for diverse Indigenous peoples including the Blackfoot Nations (Piikani [Peigan], Kainai [Blood], and Siksika [Blackfoot]) and the Tsuu T'ina.  This area was also traditionally used by by the K'tunaxa (Kootenay) people, who now reside in southeastern British Columbia.

In 1983, the Province of Alberta opened this historic site.

From 1907 to 1915, Leitch Collieries Coal and Coke Company operated its surface workings here.

Today the story of the only Canadian owned and operated coal mine in the Crowsnest Pass is told through listening posts, storyboards, and photographs.

Ruins of the surface processing plant have been stabilized and their functions are explained through pictures and stories.
